Landsbyggefonden - The Danish Building Fund – supports Denmark’s non-profit housing sector. We ensure that 1 million citizens who live in the social housing sector can live in affordable and well-maintained homes both today and for future generations.

The fund was established by the social housing organisations for the non-profit housing sector to be financially self-reliant by using its own resources. The fund is solely financed through money from the non-profit housing organisations savings and tenants, which creates a unique financial model. This way the non-profit housing sector is financially independent from state budgets and taxpayers.

Imagine the Danish Building Fund as a savings account, where the contributions come from the non-profit housing sector itself through tenants’ rent. This way the money always stays in the sector and rests on a principle of solidarity, where tenants have contributed to the fund, and the fund gives back to tenants again.

Coming from a tradition of funding primarily large-scale renovations of non-profit housing, The Danish Building Fund has progressed into working from an urban development perspective. The focus has shifted from viewing the exterior of the social houses to exploring the interior of the homes - and the people living in the social houses.

What is the Danish Building Fund supports and develops

The Danish Building Fund seeks to improve the lives that are lived in the homes of social houses in Denmark. We do this by securing that the social housing sector can continue to offer affordable and attractive housing solutions for people across Denmark.  In short, we drive the development of the social housing sector through three key areas.

1.      Economical support to large-scale renovations, urban development and social development plans.

2.      Providing data and knowledge to the housing organisations so they can develop and plan initiatives most efficiently.

3.      To aid the housing organisations in creating sustainable housing areas and cities both environmentally, socially and economically.

The fund's money is primarily spent on

  •           Large scale renovation
  •           Social development plans
  •           Infrastructure
  •           Rent regulations
  •           Outdoor facilities
  •           Analysis, digital tools etc.
